President Benson gave a great talk in 1987 titled, “Beware of Pride.” If every couple or individual read this talk and took it to heart, lives and families would be changed. He talked about how pride is enmity to words God and those around you. With pride you put yourself above others. There are so many marriages that are struggling because of this. Gottman in his book, “The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work,” Talked about how when husbands don’t turn to their wives they have an 81% chance of getting a divorce. In Benson’s talk he said, “Pride is a very misunderstood sin, and many are sinning in ignorance. In the Scriptures there is no such thing as righteous pride – It is always considered a sin.” It is never good to have pride, especially in your marriage.
There is hope though for those who are struggling with this. President Benson was able to give a way for us to overcome our pride, “The antidote of pride is humility – meekness, submissiveness.” I know the times in my marriage when I am suffering from pride, if I am able to step back and humble myself, my marriage strengthens. With repentance we are able to overcome anything in our lives. Repentance is able to rebuild families and marriages, it is hard but it is possible. Sometimes just taking a little break if we are disagreeing about something helps a lot also, that way we can calm down and think about what the other person has said.
